Dear Siddique,
hope your well,
I wish to ask what may appear to be a very naïve question. I wish to know why it is with all the various natural resources at the disposal of so many Muslim majority countries, so much of their populations are mired in poverty, Muslim countries are often the least developed and constantly at the bottom of most socio economic indicators, much of the value and benefit of these resources is being derived by developed countries and traders in the West, China etc,
can you explain this.
kind regards

Answer:
Wa Alikum al-Salam,
Al-Hamdu LiLLAAH, I am fine. Your question is interesting and very important to answer.
I have an opinion based on a particular background. Both faith and action are like plants and earth. If the soil is fertile then the plant also becomes a wonderful tree and if the soil itself is dead then the plant withers. The plant of action grows in the soil of faith. History bears witness to the fact that no nation in the world has been able to develop unless its beliefs and practices have been harmonized and compatible.
.
.
Look at the West and the European world. As long as there was a conflict between their religious beliefs and science, they lived in the Dark Ages in the world. It took them three to four centuries to get their religious ideas out of practice and confined it into the church. It is also a fact that man has not existed in the world without any belief. Even atheism is a kind of belief. In their society, when practical life was emptied of religious beliefs, one or the other faith had to make its place in practical life. Thus, capitalism, based on certain beliefs, became a religion in their practical life to fill the space. Capitalism gradually made such a place that it remained ineffective in practical lives, even the church itself became a joke. Capitalism was adopted as a religion in society with its basic assumptions. It has three basic beliefs. The first is that good and evil will be determined by man himself. The second is to maximize profits and benefits at any cost. The third is that every human being is selfish. So the West and Europe have adopted these beliefs in their personal lives. In this way they harmonized the beliefs and practices in their society and they progressed. Is development really the name of what the West and the European world have achieved at the moment? Muslim and non-Muslim standards are different to test this. Muslims see every development in the context of this world and the hereafter. Non-Muslims, on the other hand, consider the attainment of the material world to be the only success.
.
.
As far as your question is concerned why Muslim countries have not been able to achieve such development? So the reason for this is that at present there are contradictions and conflicts in the beliefs and practical systems (western democracy, capitalism, judiciary) of all Muslim countries. Beliefs are that Allah is One, Allah is the Lord of all decisions. Decisions of good and evil will be made in the light of His guidance. No law will be made against the rules of Qur’an and Sunnah. On the Day of Resurrection, we will all be held accountable for our deeds. These and other detailed beliefs of ours are in conflict with all the systems which we have put into practice in imitation of the West. Our pragmatic system demands that the decision of good and evil be made by the parliament while our belief says that this decision will be made by the Qur’an and Sunnah and we will make decisions according to it. This system demands that the economy cannot function without interest while our faith says that interest is haraam. This system tries to create selfish attitudes in us while our faith evokes feelings of brotherhood. This system makes the pursuit of material gain and benefit the main purpose of life while our faith considers the attainment of the pleasure of Allah and His Messenger as the real purpose of life for which the sacrifice of material gain is the norm.
.
.
How can we grow in the world when our beliefs and practices are incompatible! Now Muslims have only two options, either to abandon their Islamic beliefs and norms and to adopt the faith and beliefs of the system (capitalism, democracy, judiciary etc.) that has been adopted and implemented in practical life. But it would not be declared as success for a true Muslim. Or abandon your current secular system from practice and adopt the Islamic system of life in order to harmonize both faith and practice and achieve progress and honors in the world. Islamic ancestors ruled the world for 1000 years in the same way. The historians quoted their reign as the Golden Age which is our lost treasure. We can get back our lost honor only if we follow the second pattern. The poverty, use of resources, and standard of living etc will be automatically improved. This is known as “Falah” success in both worlds.
May Allah the Almighty bless us to follow HIS certain guidance (Quran and Sunnah) – Amin
